Colours & coatings

The coating decides how long the colour lasts.

Colour is the easy part. What determines whether a roof still looks right in twenty years is the coating system beneath it — chosen against exposure and expected service life, not against a swatch.

Referenced against RAL Classic so a specifier can work from a standard rather than a marketing name.

Coating systems

Five families, five different jobs.

Each system trades cost against film thickness, colour stability and mechanical resistance. A sheltered agricultural building and an exposed coastal facade should not be specified in the same one.

01

Standard Polyester

SP

The volume coating. Proven, economical, widely specified.

A standard polyester coil coating: the most widely used system in European metal roofing and the reference point every other coating is compared against. Good colour range, straightforward to produce, and entirely adequate for sheltered inland sites and agricultural or industrial buildings where the roof is a working surface rather than an architectural one.

Best for

  • Agricultural buildings
  • Industrial and storage
  • Inland, sheltered sites
  • Budget-led projects

Matt Polyester

MP

Low gloss, low reflection, contemporary.

A matt-finish polyester with a fine surface texture that scatters light instead of reflecting it. The practical effect is that the roof reads as a single flat tone rather than a series of bright and dark planes, and small substrate irregularities become far less visible — the reason it dominates contemporary Nordic residential architecture.

Best for

  • Contemporary residential
  • Architectural roofs
  • Large uninterrupted planes
  • Facades in raking light

Polyurethane

PUR

Built for the Nordic envelope.

A polyurethane-based coating developed for demanding northern climates: greater film build than standard polyester, better resistance to UV and to the freeze-thaw cycling that defines a Finnish year, and better edge protection where the sheet has been cut. Our default recommendation for residential and commercial roofs that are expected to last without repainting.

Best for

  • Residential roofs
  • Commercial buildings
  • Northern and high-UV exposure
  • Long service life without repainting

PVDF / Fluoropolymer

PVDF

Maximum colour stability.

A fluoropolymer coating specified where colour retention over decades is the governing requirement — landmark facades, dark and saturated colours, and metallic finishes that would chalk visibly in a lesser system. The most stable organic coating available on coil-coated steel, and priced accordingly.

Best for

  • Architectural facades
  • Dark and saturated colours
  • Metallic finishes
  • Landmark and civic buildings

Plastisol

PVC(P)

Thick film, high mechanical resistance.

A thick PVC-based film with a textured surface, offering substantially higher resistance to mechanical damage and abrasion than any thin-film system. Specified where the building envelope takes physical punishment — agricultural interiors, handling areas, buildings on working sites — rather than where appearance leads.

Best for

  • Agricultural buildings
  • Handling and storage areas
  • High-abrasion environments
  • Industrial interiors

On-screen colours are approximations. Coated steel changes appearance with gloss level, surface texture, viewing angle and daylight. Always confirm a colour against a physical VANKKA sample before ordering.
